Grove Mitre 10 Pupuke Pro Am

In 2019 Pupuke Golf Club decided to look at hosting a Pro Am event on the NZ PGA Tour. The Pro Am circuit is unique in sport as it gives amateur golfers the opportunity to play with and on the same courses as some of New Zealand’s top professionals.

From the very beginning Grove Mitre 10 stepped up as sponsors and their generosity and enthusiasm has flowed forward through to other areas of the Club such as providing sponsorship for the junior development program.

The event has been a great success since the beginning, averaging over 35 professionals and 100 amateurs each year it has run. The calibre of professionals has been incredibly high with regulars on the European, Korn Ferry and Japanese Tour all playing in past events.

Notable players include:

  • Mike Hendry – New Zealand Open Champion, Japanese Tour and former Pupuke junior.

  • Josh Geary – European Tour

  • Luke Kwon – 2019 Grove Mitre 10 Champion, Korn Ferry and PGA China Tour

  • Denzel Ieremia – Korn Ferry Tour.

Grove Mitre 10 MEGA Glenfield Q&A

Grove Mitre 10 MEGA Glenfield have been sponsoring the Pupuke Pro Am for the last 3 years. Being locally owned and operated, supporting the local community is at the heart of all that we do across each of the Grove Mitre 10 stores. We’re all about helping our customers build their DIY skills and providing them with the right tools for the job, no matter what their skill level may be. Whether you’re a Tradie, or a new home owner wanting to do some quick fixes around your property our team of experts have something to help you get the job done. That’s what we love about the Pupuke Pro Am – giving local golf players the opportunity to challenge themselves and build their skills in their sport, in an exciting and unique competition.

Ahead of the 2021 Pupuke Pro Am, we spoke to our Store Managers at Mitre 10 MEGA Glenfield to talk all things golf. Robert Grove has made his way through the family business since 1987 and now works as the Store Manager for Operations. Originally from the UK, Mark Stott has been based at the store since 2008 and is responsible for all things retail.

Q: What are you most excited about for the Grove Mitre 10 Pro Am?

“2020 was a year that no one will forget. Lockdowns, Alert Levels, and Border Closures are just the tip of the iceberg that we’ll remember when we’re looking back in years to come. It’s exciting to be in a position where we can connect and reconnect with our local community for a day of sport, development and fun! We’re looking forward to watching the day unfold, and hopefully we’ll get a chance to swing a golf club ourselves!”

Q: What do you enjoy most about golf?

Robert: There are several components to the game that I like – with the gratification of whacking an innocuous object across a course being pretty high on the list! Golf has long been known as a social sport; you build and strengthen relationships with your fellow competitors during the game, and then afterwards. I also enjoy the peacefulness you find when out on the course.

Mark: Different people get different experiences from the game, which may be the secret to its popularity. A day out on the course calms your mind (most of the time!), keeps you fit and sparks friendly competition with your friends. Golf allows you to look inward and work towards improvement, and reminds us that we’re not perfect but that doesn’t mean we stop trying. Whether you shoot a 72 or a 144, you’ll shake your head and wonder, but that’s all part of the fun. There’s nothing quite like spending a couple of hours out on the golf course with good company.

Do you have a favourite hole on the golf course?

Robert: Hole 15 has by far the best view of some pretty impressive orange signage by the tee! The key is to remember that the dog-leg right means that the ideal line is left off the tee to avoid the giant tree on the corner. A miss to the left will see the slope take it to the well-place bunker … or worse!

Mark: The 19th hole is my favourite hole, closely followed by the signature 17th hole. The elevated tee on this Par 3 looks down on a green protected on the left by bunkers, and on the right a steep run off. It’s imperative to hit the putting surface as anything that misses is in trouble!

Do you have a least favourite hole on the golf course?

Robert: Hole 3 – it’s perched on top of the hillside and I’ve spent many an hour battling with the elevated green!

Mark: Although it’s Robert’s favourite hole, the 15th brings back painful memories for me! I was accidentally struck on the leg by a real stinger of a golf ball that was travelling at the speed of light. One of my playing partners at the time (who couldn’t hit a golf ball if his life depended on it!) must have closed his eyes when he miss-hit an absolute screamer of a golf ball that caught me on the back of the thigh. It produced a bruise that was easily a competitor for the biggest and worst bruise ever recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records!

How close is Mitre 10 MEGA Glenfield to Pupuke Golf Course?

“Since 2006 Mitre 10 MEGA Glenfield has been located in Wairau Valley at 15 Poland Road. We’re just a short ten minute drive from the Club, based on the other side of State Highway 1.”

From the whole team at Mitre 10 MEGA Glenfield, we look forward to connecting with you all on the 30th March – make sure you stop by and say hello!

Thanks to the hard work of our green keeping team the course has always been presented in immaculate condition. For a short course by modern standards, Pupuke shows why so many great players such as former ladies World Number 1, Lydia Ko have learnt their game here. Last years winning score of one under par over two rounds shows that Pupuke can hold its own and more with the modern courses.
