the golf course

and the surprise I never saw coming

Never in my life have I ever been good at a sport. Or any physical activity for that matter. In fact, I am sitting here racking my brain trying to think of one single time in my life that I’ve excelled in this area and I’m coming up blank.

Put me in front of thirty thousand people and ask me to chat about nothing for five minutes with no preparation? Fine! I’m confident I could nail it.

Throw a javelin? Fill in on a Wednesday night netball team? Run around the block?

No.

So last week when my friend reached out and asked if I’d like to come along for a golf lesson, I accepted for the role reason that I enjoy her company and figured we could talk shit for an hour while we both embarrassed ourselves on the practice green. My husband is also obsessed with golf so I figured knowing a thing or two might pay off on the ‘family golf holiday’ we will no doubt end up taking. And yes, that is the whitest thing you’ll ever hear me say.

So at 9:30 am last Tuesday I roll up to the golf course wearing entirely non-golf appropriate clothes and we get going. The lovely teacher Andy gives us all some tips and I step up to the tee, ready for the inevitible moment that I disappoint him terribly and he gives the kinda sigh that an only be interpreted as ‘why the fuck am I wasting a sunny morning with this chump?’.

But then something crazy happened.

I took a swing.

Made contact.

And watched the ball glide up into the air and off into the distance.

Andy laughed in disbelief. My friend looked at me in shock.

I lined the next shot up. Same thing.

I fucking nailed it.

After swearing on my young son’s life that I wasn’t pulling his leg and had in fact never hit a golf ball in my life, I cried tears of disbelief and shock. It was entirely pathetic and altogether wonderful.

I will not be a champion golfer. My skills will probably never make it past the driving range. But I tried something new, something that I never in a million years thought I could not suck at, and I didn’t suck one bit. And it was fun. And it felt good.

There is something out there you’ve never tried that you’ll have a natural talent for. There’s a gift waiting for you to discover it. A skill that comes naturally to you that you’ve never given rise to explore. Your only job is to take enough chances and give yourself enough chances to find it! HOW FUN!

I am nearly forty years old (ok I’m a year off but it sounds dramatic so go with me) and I’ve found a new hobby that brings me immense joy. I can only wonder what other things I’ll discover as the years go on.

Let yourself surprise yourself. Give yourself the space and opportunity to do it.

grace + peace
